About Me

Maria Jakobsen is a Norwegian writer and journalist based in Lancaster, UK. She is currently in her 3rd year of a BA Film and Creative Writing degree, and will be progressing to an MA in Magazine Journalism in London this year. Her work has appeared in Flash Literary Journal and The Phare, and her poem ‘My Personal Botany’ was longlisted for The Phare‘s WriteWords competition.

Since October 2021, Maria has been working as a freelance journalist for Localfolk magazine. She has interviewed several artists about their practice, and her pieces aim to capture their uniqueness and passions. Her work can so far be found in the Oslo and Northern Norway issues.

Maria’s recent journalism work follows on from extracurricular work she has pursued as a university student. In 2020/2021, she was the Deputy Editor for the Screen section of Lancaster University’s student newspaper, SCAN (Student Comment and News). Alongside her editor role, she has produced a range of articles for the paper, from overviews of Scandinavian TV, to the effects of Covid-19 on medical dramas. She has also featured in other sections, such as Lifestyle, Fashion and Beauty, and Music.

Maria is currently focusing on finishing her bachelor’s degree, but is working on a short story collection she hopes to publish one day. She loves to use her writing to explore the intricacies of every day life, as well as to celebrate her queer identity. When she’s not writing, she can be found learning new crafts, spending time with friends, watching embarrassing amounts of reality TV, or petting the neighbourhood cats.

She also has experience with freelance copy-writing work, including SEO keyword and optimalisation experience, and can be contacted for more information about this.
